A solemn ceremony to open the 23rd Rhythmic Gymnastics European Championship took place at the Heydar Aliyev Sports and Concert Complex in Baku on June 29.
President of Azerbaijan and President of the Azerbaijan National Olympic Committee Ilham Aliyev was warmly welcomed by the attendees.
The tournament, which is assessed as the phase of preparation for Olympic Games and has brought together over 200 gymnasts from 33 countries, is being covered by 25 foreign journalists from Germany, Russia, Portugal, Italy, Georgia and other countries and televised live by local Lider TV as well as Eurosport and RTR-Sport channels.
Rhythmic Gymnastics European Championship took place for the first time in Madrid in 1978. This sport was for the first time included in the Olympic programme in XIII Olympic Games held in Los Angeles. Duration for every motion of gymnasts is 1,15-1,30 minutes, and 2,15-2,30 in team motions.
State hymn of Azerbaijan sounded.
The participating teams were invited to the hall.
President of the Azerbaijan Gymnastics Federation, Goodwill Ambassador of UNESCO and ISESCO, MP Mrs. Mehriban Aliyeva addressed the opening ceremony.
Then the floor was given to President of the European Union of Gymnastics Dimitrios Dimitropoulos.
After gala concert ‘Tradition’ held in base of Gobustan motives the competition was continued in the group B. In the first half of the day individual performances took place in group C.
After the opening ceremony, the competition was continued in the groups B and C. According to results of the first day, Austria is a leader with 116.250 pts, while Estonia (115,475) and Italy (113,875) rank second and third. Group Competition Juniors and Competition I Seniors - Group A will take place on June 30. Azerbaijani gymnasts compete in the Group A.
