Ilham Heydar oglu Aliyev

President of the Republic of Azerbaijan

Ilham Heydar oglu Aliyev is the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan.

He was born on December 24, 1961 in Baku.

In 1967-1977,  he attended secondary school in Baku.

In 1977, Ilham Aliyev entered the Moscow State University of International Relations.

In 1985, he received PhD in history.

In 1985-1990, Mr. Aliyev lectured at the Moscow State University of International Relations.

In 1991-1994, he managed a number of private industrial-commercial enterprises.

Since 1997, Mr.Ilham Aliyev is the President of the National Olympic Committee of Azerbaijan and holds the highest order of International Olympic Committee for the great contributions to the development of sports and Olympic movement.

In 2001-2003, headed Azerbaijan’s parliamentary delegation to Parliamentary Assembly of Council of Europe (PACE).

In January 2003, was elected Deputy-Chairman of Parliamentary Assembly of Council of Europe and member of PACE bureau.

On October 15, 2003, was elected President of the Republic of Azerbaijan with more than 76% of votes and assumed the office on 31 October 2003.

In April 2004, was awarded with the diploma of Honorable Member of PACE and the PACE medal for active participation in PACE events and commitment to European values.

On October 15, 2008, was twice elected President of the Republic of Azerbaijan with 88,73% of votes and assumed the post on 24 October 2008.

Fluent in Azerbaijani, Russian, English, French and Turkish.

The President renders special care to children. He declared 2009 the Year of Children, which became a great historical point in regards with child development. Measures taken by the government assure favorable conditions for the children in Azerbaijan to live, grow up, receive education and discover their talent.  

Series of programs are implemented upon the President’s instruction at orphanages and boarding schools to improve children’s lives and protect them. 

Olympic-sports complexes have been constructed almost in all towns of Azerbaijan to guarantee children’s healthy lifestyle. The President also ensures the education of the youth abroad.

Today, the government strives to provide the growth of every Azerbaijani child in a high social and moral atmosphere. The goal is to organize children’s life standards, upbringing, education, social security and health on a high level.
